The Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) announces the Fifteenth IAMC Annual Meeting to be held in College Park, Maryland, home of the University of Maryland, in College Park, MD, USA. The event will be held in person, with a portfolio of online events as part of the programme. Presentations in oral sessions (keynote sessions, and parallel oral sessions) will be held in person, with attendance both in person and online.
In-person sessions will be organised in the U.S. Eastern Time zone. IAMC will take action in order to mitigate the inconveniences that this may create for participants based in regions with different time zones, such as making the recording of sessions immediately available for participants for a certain time. Two kinds of poster sessions are planned: fully online and fully in person. Presenters in fully in-person sessions can present their poster also at the fully online sessions if they wish so.
IAMC hopes that this model will provide the appropriate framework for another inspiring and intellectually lively meeting.
Annual Meeting Purpose
The purpose of IAMC Annual Meetings is to:
- present and discuss the state of the art in integrated assessment modeling;
- review the status of ongoing community activities including both multi-model studies and the activities of the IAMC Scientific Working Groups;
- facilitate interaction with collaborating communities;
- evaluate and revisit the priorities of the integrated assessment community.
The IAMC annual meeting is a scientific meeting intended for peer sharing and vetting. The meeting is open to all registered participants. Researchers from organizations involved in integrated assessment modelling and their research collaborators are warmly encouraged to attend. The meeting is designed to allow researchers to share developments in methods, models and data. Participants are expected to be able to freely discuss their work.
For copyright reasons, recordings of any kind are prohibited without prior written consent of the presenter and the organisers.
Attendees may not capture or use materials presented during the meeting, including unauthorised material broadcasted or made available in the Annual Meeting website by the meeting organisers, without written permission of the presenter.
Views and opinions expressed during the meeting are those of the individual participants and do not necessarily reflect the official position of the IAMC or any other institutions.

Participation grants
The Climate Change Modelling Information (CCMI) project supports modellers to attend conferences and workshops on climate change modelling. This financial support can cover travel and accommodation costs, conference registration fees, and a per die allowance. After the conference, modellers are asked to provide a mission report describing the main insights they gained at the conference.
This year, funding support is available for a number of researchers to attend the Fifteenth IAMC Annual Meeting 2022.
The financial support for this event can cover reasonable travel* and accommodation costs (for in-person attendance), and conference registration fees (for both in-person and online attendance). After the conference, modellers are asked to provide a mission report describing the main insights they gained at the conference.
The funding support aims to remove financial barriers for modellers that will otherwise struggle to attend specialised conferences. Applications from researchers from developing countries and early-stage researchers/ students are particularly encouraged.
To apply for funding please fill in this online form by 30 September 2022.
(*) Choosing a greener mode of transport is highly encouraged. Please be conscious of the environmental impact of your travel when planning your journey and select lower-emission options where possible (e.g. trains should be preferred over planes; if flying is necessary, direct flights are preferable, etc.).
Call for abstracts
Abstract submission is now closed.
The IAMC solicits abstracts for oral and poster presentations on the following selected research topics:
- NATIONAL. Assessment of national mitigation strategies (including net-zero pathways) and the 2023 Global Stocktake. This session will focus on assessing the effectiveness and consequences of climate policies at the national scale, including the implementation of nationally determined contributions and mid-century strategies. Contributions focusing on IAM contributions to the Global Stocktake are particularly welcome. Moreover, near-term policies might also cover Covid-19 recovery programs
- DEEP. Analysis of deep mitigation strategies, including the use of carbon dioxide removal. This session will focus on (the consequences of) mitigation scenarios aimed at stringent mitigation targets consistent with the Paris Agreement. This includes the use of carbon capture and carbon dioxide removal techniques (CCS, CCU, BECCS, DACS).
- SECTORAL. Integrated assessment of pathways to carbon neutrality in individual sectors, including industry, transport and building. The Paris Agreement requires carbon neutrality around the middle of the century. This session will look into mitigation pathways for individual sectors to reach zero emissions.
- ELECTRICITY & HYDROGEN. Advanced analysis of the role of electricity & hydrogen as part of mitigation strategies. The section will look into advanced analysis of electricity and hydrogen production (including system integration) and the use of these energy carriers in end-use sectors.
- DEMAND – Modelling energy demand, lifestyle change and radical energy efficiency improvements. This session will focus on modelling energy demand and the role of efficiency improvement. Attention will also be paid to the role of behavioural change and its representation in IAM models. Finally, submissions may look into the consequences of digitalization.
- CIRCULAR. Analysis of circular economy concepts and their consequences for greenhouse gas mitigation. IAMs have typically focused on energy supply and demand changes as part of mitigation strategies. Reducing material use via resource efficiency, recycling, and re-use can indirectly lead to energy demand reductions. This session focuses on emerging IAM analysis on the effectiveness of such strategies, and the material flows through the human economy.
- NON-STATE. Modelling subnational mitigation strategies (non-state actors). More-and-more attention is given to mitigation action by non-state actors, including businesses and cities. This session will focus on IAM analysis of their contribution.
- TRANSITION. Representation of socio-technical transitions in IAM research (including institutional change) and issues related to feasibility. This session will address how to combine insights from social-technical transition research, insights on institutional change and governancy and IAM modelling. One of the relevant topics here can be dealing with different forms of feasibility (technical, economic, and socially or politically).
- ECONOMIC. Economic assessment of climate policy and integration of mitigation, adaptation and (residual) impacts. This session will focus on new work on the economic consequences of mitigation and integrated approaches to mitigation, adaptation, and impacts together. This could cover work on cost-benefit analysis, the social cost of carbon, and the integration of impacts on process-based IAMs.
- JUST. Analysis of distributional aspects of mitigation strategies and just transition strategies. The support for mitigation strategies often depends on the perceived “fairness”. In this session, we will look into the distributional and fairness aspects of mitigation strategies related to IAM analysis.
- IMPACTS. Integrated assessment of climate change impacts, including adaptation. This session will focus on modelling climate impacts in integrated assessment models. Special attention will be paid to the representation of adaptation in IAMs.
- CLIMATE. Representation of the climate system and implications of new climate research insights (including carbon budgets). This session will focus on small climate models used in IAMs to represent the carbon cycle and climate system dynamics. It will also focus on new insights on carbon budgets. Finally, the session will look into the implications of deep uncertainty in climate outcomes for climate policy
- LAND. Integrated assessment of future land use and land-based mitigation. This session will focus on the pros and cons of land-based mitigation measures such as bio-energy, reforestation and avoiding deforestation.
- SUSTAINABLE – Assessment of Sustainable Development Strategies and assessment of water/land/energy interactions. This session will look into scenarios aiming to reach multiple SDGs and analysis of the energy-water-land nexus.
- SSP – Further elaboration of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) and updates of existing quantifications. This session will focus on updates of the SSP scenarios and extensions of the SSPs in various areas and across scales, such as developing national and regional scenarios and their association with appropriate SSP domains.
- METHODS – Methodological issues (uncertainty analysis, new programming languages, presentation tools etc.). This session will specifically look at various methodological issues related to IAMs, including open science and uncertainty analysis. This may also involve model validation, presentation tools, model solvers, representation of complex policies and model evaluation.
- STAKEHOLDER – IAM, stakeholder involvement and citizen science. For integrated assessment work, legitimacy is an important requirement. This session will pay attention to stakeholder involvement or citizen science approaches in relation to IAMs
- PRESENTATION. Novel ways of communication of IAM results. This session will focus on novel ways to present IAM results and scenario assumptions. This includes new visualization techniques and more comprehensive art or design-based methods of presenting IAM knowledge.
The meeting’s organising committee will assign topics to parallel sessions and the poster sessions based on the number and quality of submitted abstracts. Poster abstracts on other topics different from the selection will also be considered.
Abstracts should include 600-1000 words and 1-3 figures, as well as a summary with a maximum of 100 words. Please ensure that the methodological approach and results of the study are sufficiently well described. Multiple submissions are allowed. It is, however, good practice in IAMC conferences to accept only one talk per person (in case a selection needs to be made).
The extended deadline for abstracts submissions was July 8th, 2022.
